Elsie Smith & Serenity Smith Forchion offer technique, creativity and teacher training workshops at colleges, circus schools, dance companies and circuses around the world. Nimble Arts is based in Brattleboro, Vermont USA where Elsie & Serenity also co-founded the New England Center for Circus Arts (NECCA) where they serve as co-Artistic Directors. Programming includes a multi year Professional Training Program as well as classes for youth and recreational students.

Elsie and Serenity are available during these 2 weeks for privately scheduled instruction at the New England Center for Circus Arts. Specialties including swinging trapeze, silks, rope, duo trapeze, straps as well as hand balancing and partner acrobatics. NECCA offers a top quality space with a pit for safely learning release moves and height for swinging trapeze. Come for a day or longer and work on technique, skills, physical preparation and / or act creation!

Required First Step in the Teacher Training Series

This 34-hour introduction to teaching skill progressions for beginning tricks on trapeze and aerial fabric also includes segments on learning styles, spotting techniques, injury prevention, basic rigging concepts, equipment maintenance, and class management skills. Note: This workshop is required for application to the Nimble Arts™ Certification Course.

This workshop is designed for those interested in learning to teach children and adults at summer camps, schools, gymnastics programs, or circus schools.

PREREQUISITES: All students are expected to prepare by successfully completing the elements in the required Nimble Arts™ DVD: Aerial Fabric: Beginning Level 1 prior to the start of the workshop. Trapeze experience is not necessary but it will make your journey easier. Age: Adult 16+

PREREQUISITE: Introduction to Teaching Aerials workshop.

This course will guide you though the curriculum created by Nimble Arts to provide clear and effective progressions and spotting techniques for beginner aerial fabric students. We'll discuss how to work with students in special demographics such as kids and older students; techniques for introducing choreography into classes; and identifying body mechanics to trouble shoot skills and progress students to the next level.

Be comfortable executing, without prompting, skills from DVD "Aerial Fabric Beginning Level 2" including cross back straddle, and be comfortable inverting off the ground. Note that participants who do not meet the required experience level will be asked to sit out the workshop and will not be refunded. This is a 5 day overview to the art of teaching trapeze and aerial fabric, with a focus on spotting techniques, injury prevention, psychology of teaching, basic rigging concepts and class management. This in depth and holistic approach to teaching is appropriate for new teachers and those with experience, and for those who work with youth or adults in a variety of educational environments including circus schools, gymnastics programs, summer camps, fitness studios and more. Note: This workshop is required for application to the Nimble Arts™ Certification Course.

'Dissecting Aerial' Symposium

The 2-day event is intended as a springboard for practitioners to come together to discuss aerial techniques, performance and pedagogy and will include lectures, practical sessions and round table discussions. 'Dissecting Aerial' will examine the particular demands of the aerial arts and present a diversity of speakers including; aerial artists, researchers, aerial rigging technicians, plus healthcare professionals from the world of sports science, psychology and performance. It is particularly aimed at experienced aerial performers, teachers, choreographers and directors and aims to generate ideas, provide practical tools and fuel food for thought towards the development of best practice.

This workshop will guide you though the curriculum created by Nimble Arts™ to provide clear and effective progressions and spotting techniques for beginner lyra/hoop students. We'll focus on body mechanics, conditioning & stretching while creating a foundation of body awareness and safety.

PREREQUISITE: Introduction to Teaching Aerials workshop.
Be comfortable executing Foundation level skills: this includes, but is not limited to skills under the bar (double ankle hang/running man, one knee hang), on the bar (front balance, straddle back balance, gazelle, amazon), and beginner "velocity" skills such as half mill circles. Exceptions to this skill level requirement can be made for teachers with physical limitations that do not hinder their ability to be competent teachers AND spotters at the Foundation level. (For example: someone in a foot cast with previous experience who can still spot and execute some skills, or someone with a shoulder injury who academically knows the skills required and are comfortable spotting.)
